An IoT platform is typically the link between the product in the field and the people or systems that need the data. That could be a technician who needs to see product status. A customer who needs to follow consumption or performance. A service department that needs to receive alarms. Or a business system that needs data for reporting, invoicing or planning.
That is why an IoT platform is not just a dashboard. The dashboard is only the visible layer. Beneath it sit device management, data collection, cloud backend, APIs, user roles, security, alarms, logging, integrations and the ability to deliver software updates. It is the overall architecture that decides whether the solution holds up when there are no longer 10 devices in testing, but 10,000 products in operation.

A central element is IoT device management. Products have to be registered, identified, configured and monitored. You need to be able to see which devices are online, which firmware they are running, whether they are sending data correctly, and whether they need service or an update. That is especially important for products out at customers, in industry, or in environments where manual access is expensive or awkward.
Another important part is data handling. Not all data needs to be stored, and not all data is equally important. A good IoT platform helps separate noise from value. Some data is needed for real-time alarms. Other data has to be gathered over time to reveal patterns, faults, consumption or performance. And some data may need to be passed on to ERP, CRM, BI systems or the customer's own platforms.
Security has to be considered from the start. When products are connected to a cloud platform, you also open a digital route of access. That is why encryption, access control, certificates, user roles, logging and secure updates have to be under control. An IoT platform must not only be able to receive data. It has to be able to do so in a controlled, documentable and secure way throughout the product's lifetime.
