But the electronics rarely stand alone. The product's size, shape, robustness, material choice, assembly, cooling, sealing and user experience are often just as decisive for whether the solution succeeds in the real world.

Electronics and mechanics are developed together

That is why we treat hardware and mechanical development as two closely connected disciplines. A PCB must not just work electrically. It has to fit into a physical product, be assembled efficiently, be protected from its surroundings and work reliably in the context where the product will be used. Conversely, the mechanics must not just look right. They have to leave room for electronics, battery, sensors, antennas, connectors, buttons, displays, cables and test points.

We develop electronics for products where standard solutions are not enough. That can mean requirements for low power consumption, compact design, high operational reliability, precise real-time control, wireless communication, sensors, battery operation or integration with existing systems. At the same time we develop the mechanical design around the product, so size, strength, materials and production method suit both the function and the market.

Mechanical development can be defining for the whole product. Does the product have to be small enough to be worn on the body, robust enough for industry, sealed enough for outdoor use, or handsome enough to sit in plain view at the end customer? Does it have to withstand vibration, heat, moisture, impact, cleaning or repeated handling? Should the material be plastic, metal, rubber, composite or a combination? Choices of that kind affect the product's function, cost, lifetime, certification and manufacturing alike.

Embedded development between hardware and software

An important part of our hardware work is embedded development. Embedded development sits at the intersection of hardware and software, because the software runs directly on the electronics we design. When the hardware, software and mechanical engineers work closely together, we can choose the right processor, define the right interfaces, place sensors correctly, optimise power consumption and make sure the product can be built compactly without compromising reliability.

We work with everything from small 32-bit ARM Cortex-M processors, such as STM32 and Nordic, to more advanced real-time processors and complex operating systems. Some products need a simple sensor node with low power consumption. Others need fast data processing, precise timing, wireless communication, or control of motors, valves, lights, pumps or industrial processes.

Wireless communication, antennas and enclosure

Wireless communication is a good example of why electronics and mechanics have to be developed together. An antenna can work perfectly on the bench but poorly in a finished product, if the enclosure, the material or the placement shields the signal. That is why we think radio, antenna, PCB layout and mechanics through together from the start.

Among other things we work with PCB design and layout, battery technology, power supply, analogue front end design, Altium, Bluetooth, USB, Ethernet, sensor technology, 3D design, enclosure design, material selection and design for manufacturing. The goal is to build a product that works, can be manufactured and can withstand the use it meets.
