When a product has been developed, tested and taken through its first pilot run, the work is not over. On the contrary, this is the start of the phase that often takes up the most of a product's total lifetime: manufacturing and operations. This is where the product has to be produced again and again, delivered to customers, adapted to new markets, supported, updated and kept alive through both planned changes and unforeseen events.

At Move we can take over whether we developed the product ourselves from the start or it is an existing product already being manufactured somewhere else. If you have production that has become too inflexible, expensive, slow or hard to manage, we can help move the product into a more local, technically strong and controlled manufacturing model.

When we take over existing production, we start by understanding the manufacturing baseline. That can be bills of materials, drawings, test procedures, component choices, assembly instructions, firmware versions, labels, packaging, documentation and quality requirements. If something is missing or unclear, we can help structure, update or recreate the necessary baseline, so the product can be manufactured stably going forward.

Flexible manufacturing with consistent quality

In this phase, stability and flexibility become equally important. The product has to be manufactured consistently, with documented quality and traceability, but it also has to be changeable when reality demands it. New markets can impose different requirements for labels, power supply, manuals, software configuration, certification, packaging or documentation. That is why it is an advantage to have a manufacturing model that can handle variants without requiring large stocks of every single version.

At Move we work with flexible just-in-time manufacturing. That means we can produce to demand and adapt production to current orders, markets and product variants. Instead of tying up capital in large stocks of different versions, production can be planned more precisely against demand. That makes it easier to introduce the product in new markets, test variants and respond to changing customer needs.

Support, changes and the product's lifetime

Operations are also about support, service and warranty. When products are out with customers, faults, complaints or RMA cases can arise. That has to be handled in a controlled process where the product is registered, analysed and documented. An RMA is not only a cost. It is also valuable feedback from the market. If several units show the same fault pattern, it can point to a manufacturing problem, a component fault, incorrect use or a design issue that should lead to a change.

The same goes for feature requests. When customers start using the product, there are almost always wishes for new functions, improvements or market adaptations. Here, change management and a controlled release process matter. Changes should be assessed, prioritised, tested and released in packages, so the product does not change at random from batch to batch.

Products often live for many years, and in that time external challenges can arise. Components can go EOL, suppliers can change specifications, lead times can explode, or critical parts can become scarce. When that happens, alternative components or suppliers have to be assessed technically, commercially and in terms of quality. A replacement component must not just be purchasable. It has to fit the product electrically, mechanically, in software and in documentation.
