From embedded software to full stack development
We develop software at several levels, and most products need more than one. Closest to the hardware sits embedded software and firmware, controlling sensors, actuators, power consumption and communication. Above that sits the backend with APIs, databases and integrations, handling data, business logic and the communication between systems. Outermost sits the surface the user meets — a desktop application on an industrial workstation, a web dashboard for monitoring, or an app for the technician in the field.
Which layers a project needs depends on the product. Is firmware and a service interface all that is required? Does data from hundreds of devices have to be gathered and shown to several types of user? Does the solution have to talk to the customer's ERP or MES system? Does it have to work when the connection is unstable? Once that is settled, we also know where the boundaries between the layers should sit — and it is those boundaries that decide how easy the solution will be to maintain three years from now.
