Data starts at the sensor

Sensors are a decisive part of correct instrumentation. This is where the product meets the physical world, and this is where data originates. If the measurement is wrong, imprecise or unstable, the rest of the system is built on a poor foundation. “Garbage in, garbage out” very much applies to technical products: bad data gives bad decisions, however good the software, the electronics or the cloud solution may be.

The right measurement principle for the application

That is why good sensor development starts with choosing the right measurement principle. Does the product have to measure temperature, humidity, pressure, flow, vibration, sound, acceleration, position or movement? How precisely does it have to measure? How often? In what environment? And what will the data be used for afterwards?

A sensor choice that works fine in the laboratory is not necessarily right in a product that has to work in heat, humidity, noise, vibration, dust, condensation or confined space.

We help find the sensor solution that fits the specific application — not just the sensor that looks best on the datasheet. That requires an understanding of measuring range, resolution, accuracy, response time, signal type, power consumption, calibration, mechanical placement and the environmental influences the sensor meets in practice.

Calibration, documentation and reliable measurements

In some products it is not enough to choose the right sensor. The sensor also has to be calibrated correctly — either during production, at service, or continuously through the product's lifetime. Measurements can change over time because of temperature, wear, humidity, component drift or influence from the surroundings. That is why it can be necessary to build calibration routines, reference points, self-tests or documented service procedures into the solution from the start.

For certain applications the sensor or measurement system also has to be certified, documented or fit for a particular use. That can be relevant in medtech, industry, food, energy or other areas where measurements form part of safety, quality, regulatory requirements or the customer's own documentation. Here we help build requirements for traceability, testing, calibration data and documentation into the product development.

Often it is not just about a single sensor. In many products we combine several measurement principles to achieve higher precision, better robustness or more reliable data. That can be a vibration measurement combined with temperature. A pressure measurement that has to be understood alongside flow. Or a motion measurement where accelerometer and gyroscope work together to give a more stable picture of the product's condition.

The sensor has to work within the whole product

Among other things we work with temperature and humidity sensors, pressure and flow sensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes, sound sensors and vibration sensors. But the sensor type is only one part of the solution. The electrical integration is at least as important. Signal ranges, analogue front end, noise, filtering, amplification, sampling, ADC resolution and power supply all matter a great deal for whether the measurement actually becomes usable.

The mechanical integration also plays a big role. Where the sensor sits can be decisive for the measurement. A temperature sensor does not measure the right thing if it sits too close to a hot component. A vibration sensor does not give usable data if it is not coupled correctly to the part that vibrates. A flow or pressure sensor can give misleading results if it is placed wrongly in relation to the medium, turbulence or mechanical design.

Sometimes the right sensor does not exist as a standard component. In those cases it may be necessary to modify an existing sensor, design a special mechanical integration or develop a custom sensor solution for the application.
