In Industrial IoT two worlds meet: OT and IT
That is why an IIoT solution must not simply be built to get data out. It has to be built so the data comes out securely. A gateway must not become an open back door into production. A cloud connection must not create dependency on a constant internet connection. And a dashboard must not grant more access rights than necessary. The architecture has to control which systems may talk to each other, which data may flow where, and who may see or change what.
Here IEC 62443 is a central family of standards. It was developed for cybersecurity in industrial automation and control systems, and describes requirements, processes, risk assessment and security work across OT and IT. The standard focuses precisely on bridging operational technology, information technology, process safety and cybersecurity.
On the IT and organisational side, ISO/IEC 27001 is often relevant. Where IEC 62443 focuses on industrial control systems and OT security, ISO/IEC 27001 concerns management systems for information security, risk management and the protection of confidentiality, integrity and availability.
For many companies, Industrial IoT also has to be seen in the light of legislation. In Denmark, NIS2 places requirements on covered companies and authorities regarding cybersecurity measures and incident reporting, among other things. And for products with digital elements, the EU's Cyber Resilience Act is relevant, because it places cybersecurity requirements on hardware and software on the EU market, including requirements for handling vulnerabilities and security updates throughout the product's lifetime.
In practice this means security has to be considered from the first line of the architecture. Which data has to be measured? Where should it be processed? Should anything be analysed locally on the device or the gateway before it is sent on? How is the connection encrypted? How are access, user roles, certificates and software updates handled? And how do you ensure the solution can be operated and documented over time?
