Embedded Linux
We develop tailored Linux-based platforms for embedded products with high demands on stability, performance and maintainability. That can be Board Support Packages (BSP), drivers, applications or system integration. The goal is a solid foundation for modern embedded products.
Embedded Linux
Embedded Linux for complex products
Embedded Linux is often the natural choice when a product requires networking, user interfaces, data processing or integration with cloud. The platform offers great flexibility. It also makes it possible to build products with a long lifetime on a proven foundation.
We develop embedded Linux solutions for industrial gateways, edge devices, HMI solutions, automation equipment and IoT products. Depending on the project, we work with standard platforms or tailored Linux distributions.
Capabilities
Custom Linux distributions (Yocto, Buildroot)
Board Support Packages (BSP)
Bootloader development and customisation (U-Boot)
Real-time Linux (PREEMPT_RT)
Driver and kernel development
Containerised applications (Docker)
Industrial protocols (MODBUS, CAN)
Board Support Packages
A Board Support Package (BSP) is the foundation of an embedded Linux platform. It contains, among other things, the bootloader, Linux kernel, device trees, drivers and hardware adaptation. It is what makes Linux run on the specific hardware.
We develop and adapt BSPs for both existing and custom-developed hardware platforms. That gives control over start-up, hardware support and future maintenance.
Linux distributions with Yocto and Buildroot
When an embedded product has to be optimised for specific requirements, we build tailored Linux distributions with the Yocto Project or Buildroot.
Yocto offers great flexibility for complex products with a long lifetime and advanced software requirements. Buildroot is often a good choice for smaller systems where simplicity and fast builds matter most.
The choice depends on the product's requirements for maintenance, software updates, security and future development.
Communication and industrial systems
Many Linux-based products act as the link between hardware, sensors and external systems.
We develop solutions with both wired and wireless communication. We also work with industrial protocols such as MODBUS and CAN. When the product calls for it, we connect the Linux platform to cloud services, databases and other software components.
From prototype to production-ready system
Developing embedded Linux is not just about getting Linux to boot. The platform has to be stable, updatable and easy to maintain throughout the product's lifetime.
That is why we work with automated builds, version control and reproducible software environments, so development, testing and production all build on the same foundation.
Experience with Linux platforms for industry
Among other things, we have developed Linux-based platforms for industrial products where stable operation and long lifetime are critical.
What we develop:
- Embedded Linux platforms
- Linux firmware
- Board Support Packages (BSP)
- Bootloaders and U-Boot
- Linux drivers
- Embedded Linux applications
- Gateway and edge solutions
- HMI and industrial Linux systems
Technologies:
- Yocto Project
- Buildroot
- U-Boot
- PREEMPT_RT
- Docker
- MODBUS
- CAN
- Qt / QML
One example is software for FLSmidth, where robust embedded solutions are a central part of the product. That industrial experience means we focus on operation, maintenance and solutions that can be developed further for many years.
Frequently asked questions
What is Embedded Linux?
Embedded Linux is Linux adapted for embedded hardware such as industrial computers, gateways and IoT devices. The platform is used when a product needs networking, advanced data processing or graphical user interfaces.
What is a Board Support Package (BSP)?
A Board Support Package (BSP) is the software that makes it possible to boot Linux on a particular hardware platform. A BSP typically contains the bootloader, Linux kernel, drivers, device trees and hardware configuration.
When do you choose Yocto over Buildroot?
Yocto is often used for larger, more complex products that need flexibility and a long lifetime. Buildroot is typically a simpler solution for smaller systems with shorter development cycles.
Can you develop Linux firmware for custom hardware?
Yes. We develop Linux firmware and BSPs for both standard hardware and custom-developed boards, where the software is adapted to the specific hardware platform.
Can you take over existing Embedded Linux projects?
Yes. We help with further development, optimisation and maintenance of existing Linux platforms, as well as migration to newer kernel versions or hardware.
Shall we turn your idea into reality?
Technical development takes more than good ideas — it takes the right skills. We have gathered hardware, software and engineering expertise under one roof, so you get from prototype to production quickly and safely.
