New software and a flexible control platform for ScanClime

An established product must be able to evolve while existing customers benefit from the improvements. Move has helped Scanbur complete new software for ScanClime and create an installation method with built-in data migration. The collaboration has since led to a new hardware control platform with an improved user interface, higher performance and flexibility for future needs.

Software development, UI design, installation method, data migration and development of a SMARC-based control platform with integration into existing modules

Controlled humidity for research environments

ScanClime controls the humidity in individually ventilated cage systems for laboratory animals. The unit is used in research environments, where stable conditions matter for both the animals' welfare and the reproducibility of the research.

The control system and user interface are central parts of the product. They must support day-to-day operation and make the unit's functions accessible to users.

New software for a product with many units in operation

Scanbur had many ScanClime units in the field running an older software version. The company wanted to move on from the old software and offer a better customer experience as well as functions that had long been requested.

Move was therefore asked to complete a new version of the control software. The task covered both the software itself and a practical way to upgrade the units already in use at customers' sites.

Upgrade with built-in data migration

A software upgrade also has to work for the technicians who carry it out. We therefore developed an installation method that made it possible to upgrade a ScanClime unit on site at the customer.

Migration of old data was built into the installation process, so the existing data could be carried over into the new software version.

Installation and data migration were thus designed together as part of the delivery. This created a concrete transition from the old version to the new one and made the improvements available to the existing units.

A collaboration built on product knowledge

The work on the software became part of a longer collaboration on the further development of ScanClime.

Through the collaboration, we have built up knowledge of the product's functions, its design and the interplay between the control system and the other modules. This has given a solid basis for further work on both the user experience and the technical platform.

Most recently, the collaboration has led to an entirely new hardware control platform with improved UI design and performance.

SMARC gives flexibility in supplier and performance

The new platform is based on a SMARC module. This lets Scanbur choose between suppliers and match the computing power to the product's needs.

The SMARC module can be replaced with another variant without redesigning the rest of the hardware. The platform can thus be adapted if the need for performance or the availability of modules changes.

At the same time, it was crucial that the new control platform could work with the existing modules in ScanClime. Hardware, software and user interface were therefore developed as one solution that supports the product's current design and leaves room for further development.

The result: modernisation with a way forward

Scanbur now has a completed new software version with a better customer experience and the requested functionality, as well as an installation method that handles the transition from the old version.

The new SMARC-based control platform has also raised the user interface and performance. It keeps the interplay with ScanClime's existing modules and gives greater flexibility in future choices of supplier and computing power.
