Automatic video tracking of birds at offshore wind farms through AI-controlled camera operation

DHI came to us asking for a video tracker solution that can automatically find and follow birds in real time and deliver optimal video sequences to DHI's MUSE system for species identification. On this project Move Innovation handled the development and testing of the solution in close collaboration with DHI – and today we manufacture the finished tracker servers in our own production.

Real-time AI and automatic camera control

The tracker server controls a pan-tilt-zoom camera entirely without human intervention. The system finds birds in the camera image, zooms in and follows the bird – and records a video sequence, which is passed on to MUSE for species identification.

The solution combines AI and advanced camera control, so even small, fast birds can be tracked stably at long range. It all happens in real time, and the solution supports several different camera systems.

Built for unmanned operation at remote locations

The system is developed to run unmanned at remote locations such as offshore wind farms, where bird monitoring forms part of environmental studies. Robustness and stable operation have therefore been central requirements from the start, and the entire installation can be monitored and supported remotely.

After the development phase the hardware was optimised for scaling, and the tracker servers are today manufactured in Move Innovation's own production. Through workshops and joint field tests, DHI's own team has at the same time been equipped to install and operate the systems themselves.
