But some things are damned useful to have together.

Not everything has to be
under one roof

We do not have our own SMD line - and that is entirely deliberate.

When we at Move Innovation talk about the benefits of having skills under one roof, it does not mean we have to be able to do everything ourselves.

SMD assembly is a specialised, well-defined process that we can buy quickly and efficiently from skilled subcontractors. The physical assembly of the components normally has limited influence on the fundamental design choices, so there is not necessarily value in having the machines standing with us.

Other areas are far more important to keep close together.

For example, we have production and full quality assurance in-house.

That is where important knowledge arises all the time:

  • An assembly that is difficult to carry out

  • Documentation that does not add up.

  • A component that often causes faults.

  • A detail that takes unnecessarily long to assemble.

When production sits a few metres from the developers, that knowledge does not stay in the production room. It comes straight back to the people designing the electronics, the mechanics and the software.

Over time the developers learn to design products that are easier to assemble, test, document and manufacture consistently. At the same time, new customer requests, component replacements and market adaptations can be implemented far faster.

The same goes for cloud and embedded software.

A connected product does not become robust if the cloud platform and the firmware are developed as two separate worlds.

The developers have to decide together what happens when the connection disappears, where data should be stored, how communication is secured, and which calculations should be done in the cloud or locally on the device.

The right split between cloud and edge is found in the dialogue between disciplines. Not in a requirement specification sent back and forth between two suppliers.

For us the point is therefore not to have everything under one roof.

The point is to gather the skills where daily dialogue, fast feedback and shared responsibility make the product better.

For the rest, we work with other specialists.
