Escape the battery hassle
When we talk about technology and autonomous sensors, there is one detail that often gets in the way: batteries!
Today the vast majority of sensors are still powered by disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries with “up to X years of life”. That sounds fine - until you have hundreds or thousands of sensors that have to be located, opened and have their batteries changed one by one.
It is expensive, awkward and not very sustainable.
That is why we have recently been working with a different approach:
instead of putting batteries into the sensors, we let them harvest energy from their surroundings – for example from perfectly ordinary indoor light
With small, highly efficient solar cells, sensors can run on the light that is already in the room. Not just direct sunlight, but also from ceiling lights and screens.
In practice that means:
- No charging
- No battery changes
- Longer life and lower maintenance
- Less battery waste
As a concrete example, together with SQUARELY COPENHAGEN we have developed CleverPlant – a solar-powered plant sensor that can run on indoor light and therefore avoids both charging and battery changes.
But the potential reaches far beyond plants:
Think workplace environment sensors, occupancy sensors, loggers in plant rooms, intelligent furniture and much more – all the places where “up to X years of battery life” is a limitation today.
